Rise and Shine: The Life of an HVAC Technician
As an employee at Tom’s Heating & Air Conditioning, my day starts early. The summer heat in Bedford, VA doesn’t wait for anyone, and neither do we. I grab my coffee, hop in the company van, and head out to our first call of the day.
Morning: Troubleshooting in Goode
Our first stop is in Goode, VA, where a family’s air conditioner decided to take an ill-timed vacation. As I diagnose the issue, I’m reminded why I love this job – the satisfaction of solving problems and bringing comfort to our customers.
Midday: Installation in Thaxton
After wrapping up in Goode, it’s off to Thaxton, VA. We’re installing a new HVAC system for a local business. It’s hard work, but knowing we’re improving their work environment makes it all worthwhile.
Afternoon: Emergency Call in Bedford
Just as we’re finishing up in Thaxton, we get an emergency call from Bedford. An elderly couple’s AC has completely shut down during the hottest part of the day. We rush over, quickly identify the issue, and have their system up and running in no time.
Evening: Wrapping Up and Planning Ahead
As the day winds down, I head back to the office to file my reports and prepare for tomorrow. Working for Tom’s Heating & Air Conditioning isn’t just a job – it’s about being there for our community when they need us most.
Why I Love What I Do
Being an HVAC contractor in this area means:
- Helping families stay comfortable year-round

- Building relationships with our neighbors
- Continually learning about new technologies
As I head home, I’m already looking forward to another day of keeping Bedford, Goode, Thaxton, and the surrounding areas cool and comfortable. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it – and I’m glad that someone is me.
